CONCATENATE and &

CONCATENATE(string1, [string2, ...]) joins text and cell values into one string, and the & operator does the same inline: =A2&" "&B2 gives a first and last name with a space. Numbers and dates lose their formatting when joined, so wrap them in TEXT.

Syntax

=CONCATENATE(string1, [string2, ...]) or =A2&" "&B2
PartWhat it is
string1, string2Cells, text in quotes or formulas to join in order. Separators such as " " or ", " are added as their own arguments.

Examples

=A2&" "&B2

Result: Ana Lopez when A2 is Ana and B2 is Lopez

=CONCATENATE(A2, ", ", B2, " ", C2)

Result: Street, City Country with the separators you typed

="Invoice "&A2&" due "&TEXT(B2, "dd mmm yyyy")

Result: Invoice 2041 due 03 Nov 2026

Without TEXT the date shows as 46329.

Common mistakes

  • Names run together (AnaLopez) because no separator was added; include " " as an argument.
  • A joined date or currency shows as a plain number; use TEXT(B2, "$#,##0.00") or TEXT(B2, "yyyy-mm-dd").
  • CONCAT only takes two arguments in Google Sheets; use CONCATENATE or & for more.

  • Address without gapsBuild one address line from columns A to D, separated by a comma and a space. Some rows have no unit, and the line must not show an empty gap. Fill E2 and E3 using TEXTJOIN.
  • Join the confirmed namesList the names of everyone who confirmed ("Yes"), separated by a comma and a space, in E2. Use JOIN and FILTER.

Questions

How do I concatenate with a line break?

Join with CHAR(10) and enable text wrapping: =A2&CHAR(10)&B2.

How do I concatenate a whole range into one cell?

Use JOIN or TEXTJOIN: =TEXTJOIN(", ", TRUE, A2:A20). CONCATENATE with a range joins the values with no separator.
