GOOGLEFINANCE
GOOGLEFINANCE(ticker, [attribute], [start_date], [end_date], [interval]) pulls market data from Google Finance into a cell: the current price by default, other attributes such as marketcap or pe by name, a currency rate with a CURRENCY:USDEUR ticker, and a dated table of historical prices when you give a date range. Quotes can be delayed by up to 20 minutes.
Syntax
=GOOGLEFINANCE(ticker, [attribute], [start_date], [end_date|num_days], [interval])| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
ticker | The symbol, ideally with its exchange: "NASDAQ:GOOG" or "NYSE:IBM". Currency pairs use "CURRENCY:USDEUR". |
attribute | Optional, default "price". Realtime: price, priceopen, high, low, volume, marketcap, pe, eps, high52, low52, change, changepct, closeyest, currency. Historical: open, close, high, low, volume, all. |
start_date | First date of a historical range. Giving a start date switches the function to historical mode. |
end_date|num_days | Last date of the range, or a number of days counted from start_date. |
interval | "DAILY" or "WEEKLY" (1 or 7 also work) for historical data. |
Examples
=GOOGLEFINANCE("NASDAQ:GOOG")Result: The latest quoted price for Alphabet, for example 182.35
No attribute means price.
=GOOGLEFINANCE("NYSE:IBM", "marketcap")Result: The market capitalization as a plain number
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:USDEUR")Result: The number of euros one US dollar buys, for example 0.92
Multiply a dollar amount by this cell to convert it.
=GOOGLEFINANCE("NASDAQ:GOOG", "close", DATE(2026,10,1), DATE(2026,10,31), "DAILY")Result: A two-column table with Date and Close headers and one row per trading day in October 2026
Historical mode spills into the cells below and to the right.
Common mistakes
- A plain ticker such as GOOG can match several exchanges or return #N/A; add the exchange prefix, NASDAQ:GOOG.
- Historical mode returns a table with a header row, so a formula that expects one number gets the word Date; wrap it in INDEX(..., 2, 2) to pick the first close.
- A currency ticker typed as USD/EUR or with a space fails; the form is CURRENCY:USDEUR with six letters and no separator.
- Prices are delayed by up to 20 minutes and some attributes are not available for every exchange or fund, so a #N/A on one attribute does not mean the ticker is wrong.

- One rate for every rowConvert each price from dollars to euros using the exchange rate in F1. Fill C2 and C3. Lock the rate with dollar signs so the same formula could be filled down the column.
- Share of total salesB6 holds the total of all regions. Work out each region's share of that total in C2 (North) and C3 (South). Lock the total so the formula could be filled down.
Questions
How do I get a currency exchange rate in Google Sheets?
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:USDEUR") returns the current USD to EUR rate. For a historical rate, give a date range the same way as for a stock: =GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:USDEUR", "price", DATE(2026,1,1), DATE(2026,1,31)).
Why does GOOGLEFINANCE return #N/A?
Usually the ticker is ambiguous, the attribute is not supported for that security, or the date range contains no trading days. Try the ticker with its exchange prefix and the price attribute first.
Can I get one historical closing price without the table?
Yes: =INDEX(GOOGLEFINANCE("NASDAQ:GOOG", "close", DATE(2026,10,1)), 2, 2) returns the close on October 1, 2026 (or the next trading day) as a single number.
