SUMIF
SUMIF(range, criterion, [sum_range]) adds the cells in sum_range whose matching cell in range meets the criterion, such as a name, ">1000" or "West*". Leave sum_range out to sum the range itself.
Syntax
=SUMIF(range, criterion, [sum_range])| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
range | The cells to test, for example A2:A100 (names). |
criterion | The test: a value ("West" or 500), a cell (E1), a comparison in quotes (">1000", "<>Cancelled") or a wildcard ("West*"). |
sum_range | Optional. The cells to add, same size as range. Defaults to range. |
Examples
=SUMIF(A2:A100, "Ana", C2:C100)Result: The total in column C for every row where column A is Ana
=SUMIF(C2:C100, ">1000")Result: The sum of only the amounts above 1000
=SUMIF(A2:A100, E1, C2:C100)Result: The total for whatever name is typed in E1
Common mistakes
- Result is 0 because the numbers in sum_range are stored as text; convert them with VALUE or Format > Number.
- Using ">"&E1 is needed when the threshold lives in a cell; ">E1" in quotes compares against the literal text E1.
- range and sum_range of different sizes silently misalign rows; use the same rows for both.

Questions
How do I SUMIF by date?
=SUMIF(A:A, ">="&DATE(2026,1,1), C:C) sums rows on or after January 1, 2026; pair two SUMIFS criteria for a date range.
How do I SUMIF from another sheet?
Reference the ranges with the sheet name: =SUMIF(Sales!A:A, "Ana", Sales!C:C).
