EOMONTH and EDATE
EOMONTH(start_date, months) returns the last day of the month that is a given number of months after the start date, and EDATE(start_date, months) returns the same day of the month that many months away. Use 0 for the current month, 1 for next month and -1 for last month.
Syntax
=EOMONTH(start_date, months) and =EDATE(start_date, months)| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
start_date | The reference date, usually a cell or TODAY(). |
months | How many months to move: positive forward, negative back, 0 for the same month. |
Examples
=EOMONTH(DATE(2026,11,3), 1)Result: 12/31/2026 (due at the end of next month)
=EOMONTH(A2, 0)Result: The last day of the month of the invoice date in A2
=EOMONTH(A2, -1)+1Result: The first day of the month of A2
Last day of the previous month plus one.
Common mistakes
- The result shows a number like 46387; format the cell as a date.
- Using EOMONTH(A2, 1) for the first of next month returns the last day of next month; use EOMONTH(A2, 0)+1.
- Adding 30 days instead of EDATE gives drifting dates across months; EDATE keeps the day of month.
