Sheetsdrill

Level 3: Lookups Exercise 37 of 68 Pro

Lookup by the start of a name

A Google Sheets formula exercise from Sheetsdrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.

The task

Product names in the price list are long. Return the price of the product whose name starts with the text in E1, using VLOOKUP with a wildcard. Answer in E2.

What this exercise teaches

With exact match, VLOOKUP treats * and ? in the key as wildcards, so a partial key finds the first full name that fits. If the real text contains a *, escape it as ~*.

A hint if you get stuck

Join a wildcard to the search key: E1&"*". The last argument must be FALSE, because wildcards only work in exact-match mode.

Functions used: VLOOKUP
